San Luis Obispo Duplicate Bridge Club

Board Minutes for November 4, 2011

The meeting was called to order by Bill Ringbom, President, at 4:07 p.m.  Board Members Gene Edgerton, Mary Neal, Bill Ringbom, Dolores Soll, and Jean Wilson were present, as well as Barbara Weiss, Manager.  Bill Donovan and Judy Obermeier were absent.

Minutes of the October 14, 2011 meeting were reviewed and approved.

Treasurer’s Report: The October 31 closing balance of $5,781.88 includes the amount of $2,352.27 donated for purchase of the shuffling machine.  (This latter figure includes the $1,500 contribution from the Unit.  Our club will contribute $1,500 and an additional $1,200 in donations is needed.)  Net income in October was $58.20.  There were 104 ½ tables for the month.

Club Manager’s Report:  (1) Barbara displayed the Janice Vivrette week winner certificate to be bestowed on Dixie Hsu in lieu of a cup (at Dixie’s request.)  (2) Pat Orlando has offered our club an additional unit game, giving us a total of three.  (3) Members who have a game at the Country Club asked to borrow four of the black bidding boxes; the request was approved.  (4) Barbara asked about reporting damaged tables to the Rec. Dept.; it was decided we will instead try to repair them ourselves.  (Mary Neal and her husband plan to come in on Thursday and repair those which can be repaired.)  Barbara will ask the Rec. Dept. to set up 12 tables in a 3 x 4 array for each game (rather than 16) to cut down wear and tear on the tables.  If we need additional tables, we will set them up ourselves in future rather than changing our request to the city.

Old Business:   (1) The shuffling machine is to be delivered today.  Bill has the new boards (4 sets for us and 2 for A.G.).  A fifth set would make for increased efficiency in setting up boards in advance of games.  Paso has a machine-compatible set  they would like to trade for one of our existing sets.  It was agreed to exchange the set in the blue suitcase.  The additional existing set will be retained for use in bridge lessons.  Mike will order a suitcase for the set we get from Paso.  (2)  We got 36 new packs of cards from Barbara Hardin today.  The Unit will provide additional cards.  We should be able to start using the shuffling machine by Wednesday evening. George Sheffield will be liaison with the Unit for related matters.  For the time being, Bill will make 25 hand records each game and be reimbursed $2 for costs.  (3) Food for the Friday December 9 Christmas party:  Mary will order hot food and bread from Mama’s Meat Balls;  Bill will get salads (5 each of 2 kinds) and desserts from Costco We will have hot coffee and hot tea with soft drinks for purchase. Barbara will be sure we have serving utensils and paper goods. (4) The fee for the Christmas party game will be $15 per couple, lunch included.  (This will be re-evaluated if we do not get the needed additional $1,200 donations for the shuffling machine.)

New Business:  Dick Weiss dropped by to report a problem with kitchen clean-up following games.  Today, as well as at other times, everything was left in a mess and he cleaned up by himself.  Various options were discussed; the decision for now is to have directors ask for clean-up volunteers about ¾ of the way through each game and see if this solves the problem.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.  The next meeting will be after the game on Friday, December 2.

Respectfully submitted,

Dolores Soll, Secretary
